History of Torrington
Torrington is an important heritage centre. Although we can trace its roots back to Saxon times, and the building of a castle and keep by Richard de Merton in the 14th Century, Torrington's greatest "claim to fame" comes in the 17th Century. The Civil War to be precise. It was here that the Battle of Torrington on 16th February 1646 finally marked the end of royalist resistance in the South West. This, in turn, led to the eventual defeat and execution of Charles 1st.
To mark this great occasion, the townspeople of Torrington still hold a torchlight procession through the town each year, with many dressing up in 17th Century costume.
